SCANDINOVA RECEIVES 75 MSEK ORDER FOR THE SWISSFEL PROJECT FROM PAUL SCHERRER INSTITUTE (PSI)

Uppsala, Sweden, February 25, 2016. ScandiNova Systems AB has received an order of 13 high precision pulsed power Modulators from PSI, to be installed at the new Free Electron Laser (FEL) scientific research facility called SwissFEL in Villigen, Switzerland.  The order has a value of 75 MSEK. Deliveries will take place during 2016 and 2017.

ScandiNova offers a wide range of high-power solid-state modulators optimized for different applications, such as advanced scientific research. This order consists of Modulators adapted to high power C-band (5712 MHz) Klystrons operating up to 50 MW RF peak power at a world-leading pulse-pulse stability of 13 ppm, all of which is made possible by the company’s patented Split Core and parallel Switching Solid State Technology.

The ScandiNova modulators will form a vital part of the new large scientific research facility at PSI – the X-ray free-electron laser SwissFEL. Commissioning starts in 2016 and the first pilot experiments are scheduled for late 2017. The free-electron laser produces X-rays of a far higher brilliance (a measure of X-ray intensity) than even the most advanced synchrotron light sources. The pulses of X-ray light generated from SwissFEL open up completely new research possibilities and lead to many practical applications; e.g. new pharmaceuticals.

– We are  pleased to welcome ScandiNova as one of our innovative partners for the realization of Switzerland’s new cutting-edge research facility SwissFEL, says Hans Braun, the SwissFEL project leader for the accelerator.

ScandiNova started the collaboration with PSI in 2007 designing and manufacturing a Solid State Modulator for a special C-band Klystron adapted to the SwissFEL injector. In 2008 ScandiNova received an order of another 7 Solid State Modulators optimized for the SwissFEL injector. In 2012 a prototype Modulator for the SwissFEL C-band accelerators was ordered. The high performance and quality requirements by PSI has pushed ScandiNova to continuously improve and push the technology to new levels not reached before.

– We are honored to receive this prestigious order from one of the leading research institutes in the world, and to contribute to further improve the new generation of light sources. Our collaboration with PSI has further strengthened our product offering as well as our leading position within Pulsed Power Systems, says Fredrik Mella, CEO ScandiNova Systems.
