ScandiNova contributes to increased availability of cancer therapy – Over 25,000 treatments per day with ScandiNova's modulator

ScandiNova is a world leader in developing and manufacturing high-voltage pulse modulators that are used, among other things, as a power source in radiotherapy systems for treatment of cancer.

In total, there are more than 15,000 radiotherapy systems installed in hospitals worldwide. Leading manufacturers are Varian Medical Systems, Elekta and Accuray, but there are many more players with different applications and specialist areas. Today, ScandiNova is a partner and supplier to most companies in the markets in the USA, Europe, and Asia.

A major challenge for manufacturers of radiotherapy systems is the increased worldwide demand for access to cancer treatment, which requires both new technologies and reliable systems that are easy to install, use and maintain.

The pulse modulator, which can be considered as the power source, is a key component of a radiotherapy system. It is the pulse modulator which generates power to accelerate the particles (usually electrons, but in some cases also protons) that irradiate the cancer tumour and treat the patient.

Historically, most manufacturers of radiotherapy systems have used PFN (Pulse Forming Network) based pulse modulators with electron tubes (thyratrons). ScandiNova is leading the way in replacing these with modern semiconductor-based modulators that have significantly longer lifetimes, higher uptime, better energy efficiency and take up less space. Our modulators also have minimal consumables and require very limited maintenance. By that, we contribute to a higher availability of radiotherapy treatment and to the development of new methods.

We also strive to constantly improve all aspects of our delivery, including making products smarter through efficient information flows between ourselves, the manufacturers of the radiotherapy systems and the hospitals.

Every day a new cancer therapy treatment machine is installed somewhere in the world with our modulator inside, and in total our installed base contribute to over 25,000 treatments per day. This is something we are very proud of, and our journey has only just begun. We want all existing and new radiotherapy systems to use modern pulse power technology.
