Contributing to CERN’s efforts to develop more compact and efficient particle accelerators

ScandiNova is pleased to announce that CERN has placed an order for two fully equipped high-voltage, klystron-based RF units, which will form an important part of the next upgraded phase of the AWAKE project, scheduled to start operations in 2029. Delivery of the RF units is planned for 2027.

The order comprises:

  • One K300 S-band RF Unit, delivering up to 45 MW of RF peak power, 2–4.5 µs pulses, and a 10 Hz pulse repetition frequency.
  • One K300 X-band RF Unit, delivering up to 25 MW of RF peak power, 1.5 µs pulses, and a 10 Hz pulse repetition frequency.

In addition, the contract includes an option for a K400 RF unit designed to drive an X-band klystron up to 50 MW.

The AWAKE experiment at CERN explores novel plasma wakefield acceleration techniques that can achieve very high gradients over much shorter distances, enabling more compact and efficient accelerators. The upgraded AWAKE project, now underway during CERN’s planned accelerator shutdown period, aims to deliver electron energies of 4–10 GeV using new plasma stages and beam lines.

This contract further strengthens ScandiNova’s position as a trusted supplier of precision RF systems for frontier accelerator research.
